August Eats

pizza portland

Here is a roundup of some of the best things I ate this month that I haven’t posted about yet, specifically all those BLTs and summer salads in the previous post! Up first is the pizza from Prettyboy pictured above. This is a “hunk”, a large square cut into 2 slices. A good amount of pizza without committing to a full size pizza. Grand Theft Autumn: Mozzarella, Vodka Sauce, Ezzo Cup Char Pepperoni and Oregano. Topped with Burrata, Fresh Basil, Pecorino and Hot Honey. One of the best slices in town.

3 taco plate from Mahi Taco. 2 garlic shrimp, 1 mahi taco. Mac salad, Coleslaw, Rice. Always my favorite tacos in town, and one of my favorite plates in town as well. Mahi Taco makes regular appearances in this blog (they have their own post) and on my IG.

Bulgogi Bibimbap from Kim Jong Grillin’. This always slaps. Such a perfect well-rounded meal. Was hoping to score Galbi shortribs but they had sold out so went for bulgogi. Korean is one of those cuisines I could eat daily.

Fried chicken leg quarter and pineapple salad from Hat Yai. This pineapple salad is the current special at the Belmont location of Hat Yai. Pineapple, cucumber, red onion & dried shrimp, tossed in a Thai chili tamarind fish sauce dressing. So good! I’ve never had a salad quite like it. And that fried chicken, so incredible. The leg 1/4 is my standard order from them, I think it’s the best bang for your buck. One of my favorite lunches this summer.

Steak taco, shrimp taco and maduros from Callejon29. Callejon29 is a new food cart in alley just off Alberta (right around the corner from Cliffs). They opened this summer and quickly made the PDX Eater list of top 5 tacos in town, so I knew I had to check them out. Super nice folks. These tacos really are next level. After eating this I went back and got another steak taco. The maduros were so good, great side to go along with the tacos! This food really made me feel like I was back in Mexico. Highly recommend this place and these tacos.

Barbecue plate from HarBQ. Most of the time I’m going to HarBQ for their specials, specifically whatever sandwich and side special they are running (like those BLTs and summer salads!) but sometimes you just need to get a whole bunch of meat and food! Pork belly burnt ends in a gochujang glaze, pork shoulder with chimichurri, black pepper sausage, mac and cheese. Their barbecue is so delicious! I love having them in the neighborhood.

Chicken and Sausage gumbo from Nolia PDX. Not much to look at, but it’s gumbo ya know?! Nolia is a new cart in town serving up Cajun and Creole classics. This gumbo is done right! Served with rice and bread (not shown) it’s delicious, filling, and a great deal at $15. I love gumbo and really all the cajun and creole food I’ve ever had. This place is doing it right.
