This is a follow up to a post I made 1.5 years ago rounding up my favorite breakfast burritos. This is not a guide to the best in town so much as it is my recent favorites. No repeats from the previous post, a lot of these places are new to me and I sought them out specifically for their breakfast burritos. They are ranked in order of my favorites.
Starting with the featured image at the top of the post. Steak & Eggs burrito from Smart Donkey. I visited Smart Donkey for the first time a few weeks ago to try their regular burrito and it was excellent. They make breakfast burritos just on the weekends. A permanent food truck located on SE 50th just north of Powell Blvd. They are serving up some of the best burritos in town. This burrito had steak, eggs, potatoes, refried beans, sautéed peppers and onions. The burrito had a great depth of flavor. Salsa wasn’t required, just additional if you want some heat. Large and in charge, $17 and totally worth it in terms of quality and quantity. They have a killer salsa lineup. Angels Tears is one of the hottest salsas in town.

Breakfast burrito from A Comer, a permanent food truck located on NW 28th and Thurman. A Comer is serving up different Mexican items like pambazos, tlacoyos and tacos de canasta. Things I haven’t seen outside Mexico before. The prices and quality are great. This breakfast burrito was solid sized and only $11. Chorizo, egg, potato, cheese, sour cream and pico de gallo. A real classic breakfast burrito. The nice thing is you can order this any time they are open. As someone who doesn’t leave the house before noon, I’m always on the look out for breakfast burrito options during the lunch hour. This one was easily the best value in terms of price, quality and quantity. They also have a killer salsa lineup.

From Tamale Boy: Chorizo, potato, egg, cheese, avocado. Real classic lineup here. Not mad at all about it. Tamale Boy is a PDX institution at this point, they’ve been around for 12 years. They just moved from their Russell Street location a few blocks to N. Williams and they expanded their menu as well. The former restaurant was mostly tamales, burritos and tacos. The new location has more upscale options and it seems like they are chef-ing it up. I believe this breakfast burrito is a new item. It was tasty, good sized and reasonably priced. Nothing fancy, just solid.

Steak and Eggs Burrito from La Osita. I had gotten a number of recommendations to go try out their breakfast burrito. La Osita is a coffee shop, Mexican brunch and lunch spot located at 1135 SE 80th ave. Nice vibe there for sure. Carne asada, eggs, black beans, bell peppers, pico de gallo, sour cream, flour tortilla. Really tasty. From just a flavor and execution standpoint, this was the best one. The knock on it is that it is small and not a full meal (for me at least). And though not outrageously expensive, I would need to order two of these to make a meal, which would be prohibitive. Still really tasty, and a good option for people who eat 2-3 meals a day. The owners seemed real nice and the salsas were excellent.

Last on the list (and least in terms of size) is this breakfast burrito from the Slow Haste coffee shop via their neighbors at Tropicale. This is located at 23rd and NE Glisan, a collection of micro-restaurants. I like Tropicale. I never go out for coffee but I can tell you this spot was packed 30 minutes before closing at 1! I was surprised at the line. Not sure if it’s the quality of coffee or the location or what. I just knew that they were serving breakfast burritos. Bacon, potatoes, caramelized onions, scrambled eggs, cheese. Served with a nice homemade salsa verde sauce. This was super tasty but tiny. Real classic flavor profile plus the caramelized onions were a nice touch, I don’t think I’ve ever had that before. Flavor and execution were solid, it is just the tiny size that didn’t work out for me. I also got a pastry and it was still not enough food.
I want my breakfast burritos to be a full meal and last me all day long. Maybe that’s just me. But on the other hand I’m never not enjoying myself while eating a delicious breakfast burrito, even if it is small. I will leave a link to my initial breakfast burrito posting from February 2025. Happy eating!
