Desperados Sandwiches

Last month I stumbled across a food cart slinging classy and highly delicious sandwiches made on house made focaccia bread. Located at 7339 NE Martin Luther King Jr Blvd (just south of Lombard) at the “Park the Carts” food cart pod. I was visiting to check out Savage Soulfuleatz, a soul food cart which is also good and worth checking out. I had been to this pod in the past, mostly for the Electric Rice Company, an Island Food Cart (also worth checking out!). I can speak for, and recommend those three carts. As I was waiting for my food I was scoping the menu at this sandwich cart that had serious sounding ingredients like Flank Steak, Prosciutto, Chimichurri, Apple Jam and Balsamic Reduction and I was like damn these sandwiches sound good! I had never heard of this place before, which at this point in time is rare. I almost always have a place on my radar through prior recommendations, but this was a total newbie for me. And boy am I glad I tried them out! One month and three visits later this cart has rocketed into my top five sandwich spots in town. Let’s get into the sandwiches.

The Gabagool. Capicola, salami, fresh mozzarella, lettuce, roasted tomatoes, pepperoncini, oil & vinegar on focaccia. Not very many places in town offer up a gabagool. I fell in love with this sandwich years ago at Bacchi’s Deli in town. This is the best one I’ve had since then. First off the bread is fantastic. He is making his own focaccia daily in the food truck and it’s some of the best focaccia I’ve ever had. Perfectly oily, chewy, springy, salted on top. It really is special and sets them apart as a sandwich joint in town. The quality of ingredients is top notch as is the conception and execution of the sandwich. The size is great, it’s a lot of sandwich. Also got a side of the potato salad, which has turned into one of my favorites in town.

Flank Steak. Flank Steak, Caramelized Onions, Arugula, Mayo, Chimichurri, Provolone on Focaccia. Wow this sandwich really blew me away! This was from my second visit. Steak sandwiches are one of my favorite types, and steak and chimichurri is one of the best flavor combos out there. Again, the execution really shined. The steak was delicious and perfectly cooked. All the ingredients worked well and that chimichurri really tied everything together. One of the best steak sandwiches I’ve ever eaten.

Roasted Turkey from this weekend. House Roasted Turkey, Spinach, Red Onion, Roasted Poblano Pesto, Smoked Gouda on Focaccia. This was really excellent as well. A classy turkey sandwich. The poblano pesto ate kind of like a chimichurri, it was intensely flavorful, especially with garlic. I liked it, though I think it had the tendency to crowd out the flavor of the turkey. I didn’t get much poblano flavor, but all in all it was a zesty accompaniment to the sandwich. The turkey was great, as was the smoked gouda. Side of potato salad of course.

Besides being some of the best sandwiches in town, the value is also great. The sandwiches are big, the bread is to die for, the ingredients and sauces are all top notch, and the price point is between $13-16. You won’t find a better deal. The potato salad is only $3 and is super tasty. I think he puts a hint of horseradish in there. I will leave you with an overhead pic so that you can fully appreciate how beautiful this bread is, as well as get a more in focus view of the potato salad. Highly recommend this food cart. They are open everyday except Tuesdays. Other sandwich options are Prosciutto (my next choice), Pork Tenderloin, Chicken Cutlet and a Caprese.
