This is my second post about Dimo’s Apizza, which is fast becoming a Portland favorite for it’s New Haven style pizzas, salads, handmade pastas & seasonal vegetables. You can find that post on the homepage from late last year. Then I was waxing poetic about a pasta special (lumache) as well as their Brussels Sprouts, which remain my favorite all time preparation and I order all the time. This time it’s all about their grinders though. They offer a rotating selection (usually 4 per week) of grinders on Thursday-Sunday from 11-3 and they are phenomenal! Pretty much everything from scratch, starting with the bread, which is perfect. Hearty, flavorful sesame seeded sourdough baguettes that are the perfect vessel for whatever they are stuffing in there. Like I mentioned earlier, these are on a rotating basis, so if you’re angling for one particular sandwich it might not come around for a few weeks. The secret is that ALL of them are incredible, so just order the one that sounds most delicious that day. And do yourself a favor and get some Brussels or salad as well. Not that you will be hungry, since these are big grinders. You could split one between two people if you got a side as well. These are easily some of the best sandwiches in a city filled with excellent sandwiches! I have ordered more than the five listed below, but here are some pics and brief descriptions to whet your appetite.

Hot Italian: Prosciutto, spicy capicola, salami diablo, calabrian chili, marinated peppers, tomato confit, fresh mozzarella, basil and a balsamic glaze. This was just wow. Familiar yet elevated, it was so delicious I am still thinking about it a month later. If pressed to pick my favorite, it very may well be this one.

Roast Pork Raab. I had never heard of this sandwich before, apparently it’s a Philly thing? Anyways, super delicious. Roast pork was super flavorful and the broccoli raab was a nice bitter contrast to the meaty richness. Toeing the line of too bitter, but not quite over the edge. It was a very eatable, crave-able sandwich.

Speaking of Philly, here is a Philly style cheesesteak. Cheesesteaks are turning into one of my favorite sandwiches. Forget the cheese whiz and questionable meat. This has quality beef and cheese. Both Dimo’s and Piccone’s are turning out phenomenal cheesesteaks.

Pastrami Reuben. Their take on this classic sandwich is itself classic. It all starts with the quality ingredients y’all! House cured pastrami (which was insane), sauerkraut, Swiss cheese, 1000 island dressing on a rye sesame-caraway baguette. They even made a special version of their baguette for this sandwich! You could really taste the caraway seeds. One of the best reubens I’ve had.

Last up is a chicken caesar grinder. This is from the most recent run of sandwiches last week. While not my favorite of theirs, it was still really delicious and creative. The chicken was breaded and fried perfectly. I like the concept of it, it came across as a little plain in terms of flavor. Do yourself a favor and get a grinder from Dimo’s Apizza, I can guarantee you won’t regret it! Happy eating.
