Mahi Taco

Mahi Taco is one of my favorite food carts located in the Piedmont Station Food Carts on NE Killingsworth St. Open going on ten years now, Jeff at Mahi serves up Baja style tacos and Hawaiian food. The common theme being the beach. These are some of the best Baja style fish tacos I’ve had, and that includes traveling in SoCal, Hawaii and Mexico. The namesake of the cart is Mahi, so of course you have to get one of those tacos, but the other meats are super delicious as well and are more Hawaiian inspired: Huli Huli Chicken, Kalua Pork and Fried Avocado. The only one I haven’t tried is the fried avocado. He recently switched his old chicken recipe for huli huli. I like both but ultimately prefer the old one. You can order 3 things: tacos, plate, or taco plate. Plates come with rice, slaw and mac salad. The sides are good but the main show are the tacos! I usually order 3 tacos, most often 2 Mahi and 1 Chicken. These are larger tacos served on a flour tortilla so 3 tacos is a meal for a hungry person. Or I’ll order a double-protein plate ($3 extra). The prices are low and the portions are large, and the quality of the meat is top notch. For my money these are the best tacos in town in terms of both quality and affordability.

Double Protein plate: Mahi Mahi & Kalua Pork. Look how delicious that fish looks! You can get the fish blackened, which I love. I fell in love with blackened fish as a kid visiting my nana in Florida and that is an early memory of the foodie I would later become. This is a perfect plate! The sides are solid, my fave is the slaw. Jeff has a special touch with the meats. He makes my favorite fish, kalua pork and chicken. They are all delicious, expertly seasoned and top notch.

Taco perfection! Must be eaten right away on a sunny day. 3 tacos is the perfect lunch. Look how beautiful they are! Have you ever seen better looking tacos? 2 Mahi and 1 Chicken is my standard order and what is shown here. The veggies are fresh, vibrant and colorful. Slaw, cilantro, pico de gallo, Colby cheese and a wedge of lime. I have tons of basically this same photo but only need one for this post. The one thing I don’t have a photo of is the pork sliders, don’t sleep on those, they are delicious! Think about subbing one of your tacos out for an order of two sliders.

From my visit two days ago. Double protein plate with Mahi and the new Huli Huli chicken. Like I said before, I liked the old chicken recipe and I like the new one. I haven’t gotten this new chicken in a taco yet. I love Hawaiian food and eat more and more of it as time goes by. From discovering it both here at Mahi Taco and my fave take-out spot Ate-Oh-Ate, there have been a lot of excellent newer spots opening up like GrindwitTryz and especially Kau Kau. Mahi Taco is one of the spots I recommend to all my friends and strangers alike. I feel like this spot is not on the PDX foodie radar, which is a shame since his tacos really are the best in town. More of an IYKYK kind of spot, but hopefully that changes. Either way, I will continue to shout out Mahi for making some of the best food in town. Happy eating.
