Stacked Sandwich Shop

Stacked Sandwich Shop is back. After closing 1.5 years ago they have reopened in a new location, taking over the Sunshine Noodle spot (gone too soon…). On the menu are 8 regular sandwiches and a rotating/seasonal option, along with a few sides: fries, chips, salad, potato salad. They are well-known for their oxtail french dip. I ordered the seasonal special, which is an Oregon Bay Shrimp Roll. Fresh Oregon Bay Shrimp, citrus aioli, shaved cucumber & radish, herbs, on a garlic butter toasted roll. As a side I got their potato salad.

This sandwich trafficked in mild flavors, which is ok, though I could’ve used some more zing and pop. Highlights were the bread, which was well toasted and flavored with garlic butter. It had a focaccia type flavor and consistency. The shrimp were good, very mild tasting and not particularly “shrimpy”. Though since the name of the restaurant is “stacked” I thought they could have loaded some more shrimp on there. I like the inclusion of radish and cucumber, but they were unseasoned and un-sauced, a little bit of a vinegar pickle or dressing would have gone a long way. I didn’t detect any of the citrus aioli, the sandwich definitely could’ve used some (more) of that. In fact a squeeze of lemon over the whole thing would’ve gone a long way. Conceptually this is a good sandwich, but the execution left something to be desired.

I love potato salad, especially when done right with quality ingredients (not talking supermarket deli potato salad here people). Theirs was fairly unique – fingerling potatoes, macerated shallots with smoked paprika, fresh thyme, scallions, sour cream, aioli, pickled mustard seeds, herbs, bacon bits. I like the use of fingerling potatoes, mustard seeds and bacon bits. The sour cream and aioli made it a bit too thick, could’ve been a thinner coating. Otherwise an interesting take on potato salad. I do want to go back and try some other offerings, they have different sandwiches like a smoked turkey hero and a green curry fried chicken which sound interesting. Happy eating.
