Mole Mole

Holy Mole, I have found my new favorite Mexican food in town. Between Mole Mole and Ki’ikibaa, Portland is entering into a new era of super delicious, authentic Mexican food. You can find my review of Ki’ikibaa on this page as the first review.

Mole Mole is a food cart on Alberta and 23rd that serves a wide variety of Mexican cuisine with an emphasis on different types of moles. They serve standard fare of tacos and burritos, but I was looking to try something different and unique. And that is exactly what I got. In the past I haven’t been blown away by the moles I have tried from various places in Portland, for the most part they seem bland and often too sweet. I know that mole means sauce and that there are near endless variations of them, but I feel like the only one you ever see around here is mole negro.

What I ordered, and what is pictured above is their dish “tres moles enchiladas” and it was fantastic. You can get any meat inside the enchiladas, so I tried a different one in each: asada, pollo y carnitas. The meats were all great, the asada was my favorite. The three moles were fantastic as well, each one quite unique, especially the mole rosa (red). I have never tasted anything quite like that before. The mole negro was fantastic, and my favorite of the three. It was rich, complex, nutty. I couldn’t get enough of it. The dish also came with rice, which was tasty and well-seasoned on its own, and a small arugula salad, which was a nice touch. Overall, it was a very delicious dish. Unique, tasty, filling, reasonably priced, and very well plated and presented. I also got a jamaica agua fresca, which was tasty as well.

This place is definitely going to become a regular spot for me. It has everything I want in a food cart: interesting, unique food, an extensive menu and they serve the food on plates! Seriously, look at that plate! It is a nice plate, fancier than most restaurants. They have so many things I want to try, that even if I go weekly (which I will) it will take me a long time to make my way through the menu. Highly recommend this place to anyone wanting to explore some different Mexican flavors.
