In today’s installment of “What Did Spencer Eat For Lunch?” I got takeout from the Filipino food cart Baon Kainan. Have you ever had Filipino food? I only have a few times, and was excited to check out this newer cart in NE right next to Matta, which I wrote a piece on last month. I’m all about trying different Asian cuisine and specialties. And of course I love trying new things! Their menu on the weekend features brunch items and is different than the W-F menu.
What I got, and what is pictured above is Tosilog. Tosilog is crispy pork belly tocino along with 2 eggs sunny side up, tomatoes, onions all on a bed of garlic rice. The runny yolk covers the rice, and the tomatoes and onions give a bright note of acidity to balance the richness of the eggs and pork. The pork belly was generous in portion, 3 big hunks of it, and was tasty (when is pork belly ever not?) though there was a bit of a funky flavor that maybe they used to marinade it? All in all this was a tasty, hearty, different take on brunch. I had showed up hoping to get Topsilog, which is the same dish but with marinated beef strips instead of the pork belly. I think the dish might work better with the marinated beef, but I will have to wait and see. I also got an order of the longonisa pork lumpia. I am a sucker for lumpia and always try order it if I see it on the menu. These were tasty and were served with a good sweet and spicy dipping sauce made in house.
I recommend this place for people wanting to try some different Asian cuisine and flavors. I will be back to try some of their other offerings, like Chicken Adobo and Kare Kare Fries. The owner couple running the cart seemed nice, the prices and portions were solid, the ingredients quality and well thought out. Happy Eating!
