Matta

In today’s installment of “What Did Spencer Eat For Lunch?” I got takeout from Matta, which is a Vietnamese/American fusion food cart on NE Couch and 8th. They describe the food as viet kieu, which means foreign-born Vietnamese. Think American classics like burgers and sandwiches but served on a pandan bun and with different types of sauces, like fish sauce. Alongside more traditional Vietnamese dishes of braised meats in various broths. I had been here a few times before but hadn’t gotten one of their sandwiches. Very interesting and unique flavor combinations.

Today I got their Fish Sando, which is a fried catfish filet atop their toasted pandan bun with American cheese, rice vinegar pickles, thai chili tartar sauce and goislaw (kind of a Vietnamese slaw). The pandan bun definitely hits different, what you can’t see in the pics is how green it is on the inside. The sando was tasty, though no lie I could’ve eaten 3 of these. Got fries on the side, which they toss in garlic salt (big fan) and spiced ketchup (also big fan). I think the goislaw might have been my fav part of the sando, it injected a needed acid/citrus quality to liven up the other flavors. I’m a sucker for catfish in Po Boys and sandos. The flavors and balance was on point, I just personally wished the portions were larger. I would recommend this place to people, especially smaller people, with smaller appetites. It was a very tasty snack! Happy eating.
